Have your say the Legacy Mines Remediation Draft Bill

Published

Remediating legacy mines is critical to protect the environment and public safety.

This is why the Northern Territory has in place strict rules around the rehabilitation of mines in the Territory – including the mandatory requirement for operators to lodge a security with the NT Government.

The security covers anticipated costs if the NT Government needs to take action to rectify environmental harm caused by mining activities.

In the past however, historical mining has left a significant amount of legacy mines or legacy mine features – with around 900 identified to date across the Territory.

To address this, mining operators must pay an annual levy to fund work to address the environmental impacts left by legacy mines.

The levy is equivalent to 1% of the total amount of security for each site.

The NT Government is now embarking on a series of key regulatory reforms to ensure the framework for mining remains modern, robust and transparent.

As part of this, the Legacy Mines Remediation Exposure Draft Bill is now out for public consultation.

The new legislation will contemporise the way legacy mines and legacy mine features are managed in the Territory.

It will deliver a more innovative and flexible framework that will also provide greater opportunities for Territory businesses and community groups to become involved in remediation works.

Delivery of remediation projects in regional and remote NT provides valuable employment and economic benefits for Territorians.
