Legacy Mines Annual Statement
The Territory Government is committed to the continued development of a world-class regulatory regime to support sustainable development of our mineral resources.
As part of that remediating legacy mines is critical to protect the environment and the public from negative impacts.
To fund projects that address the legacy mines liability, operators must pay an annual levy.
The levy is 1% of the security and is non-refundable. The Mining Remediation Fund (the Fund) is financed by the levy and is used to address environmental impacts, including safety risks, caused by legacy mines. Legacy mines and legacy mine features are mining activities where no security held or the security has been expended.
The NT Government has recently published its first Legacy Mines Annual Statement which outlines the activities and achievements of the Legacy Mines Unit and the Mining Remediation Fund for the 22-23 financial year.
The MRF holds money in trust to be used by the government to minimise or rectify environmental harm caused by legacy mines; and to address risks from legacy mining to minimise the liability to the NT.
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT) reports on the Fund in its Annual Report.
This Annual Statement is an expanded summary showcasing the activities undertaken this financial year through the Fund and Legacy Mines Work Program.
Some of the key achievements during the 2022-23 financial year include:
- Establishing the Legacy Mines Advisory Panel to provide industry perspective and advice on legacy mine activities that supports government decision making;
- Completing a mine waste characterisation and material assessment at Sandy Flat, and progressing remediation planning
- Completed an audit of 71 small mines in the Tennant Creek region, identifying 344 legacy mine features
- Implementing an alternative delivery model and awarding a contract to audit over 600 legacy mine sites across the NT over three years.
