Remote Power Systems

The Territory Government is working on a strategy to deliver sustainable energy to remote communities currently provided electricity through the Government’s Indigenous Essential Services (IES) program.

Of the 72 communities powered through the IES program, the majority are supplied from diesel-based generation, which is expensive to run and can have negative environmental impacts. Alternative energy sources can help to diversify community energy supplies, improving the resilience of community energy supply and placing downward pressure on energy costs.

The government is progressing with a detailed analysis to map the optimal sustainable energy pathway for these communities - focusing on maximising opportunities for local industries, creating jobs for Territorians and strengthening local skills and expertise.

Local IES community-based organisations and representative bodies are encouraged to email RemotePowerSystemStrategy.DME@nt.gov.au to register their interest in the government’s plan.
