Wind energy
The prospects for wind energy in the Northern Territory are promising. With key sites identified and strong government support, wind energy projects are set to play a significant role in achieving the Northern Territory's target of net zero emissions by 2050.
The integration of wind energy will complement existing solar and battery storage systems, creating a robust and resilient sustainable energy network for the Territory. By harnessing wind energy, the Territory is taking a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
NT Wind Study
In 2023, the department engaged global consulting firm, Jacobs to undertake an NT Wind Resource Assessment and Wind Measurement Strategy to gain a better understanding of the Territory’s wind resource potential.
The study provides an evidence-based strategic approach to mapping the Territory’s wind resources and identifying opportunities for wind generation and features a wind compatibility assessment map.
The public release of the NT Wind Study aims to facilitate investment in wind generation projects, offering baseline wind data and information, and highlights locations with high wind resource potential.
The department is continuing further work to develop details of the wind resource potential by collecting and publishing wind measurement data in locations considered the most viable.
